Celebrate this great traditional day while having fun with the family and learning some Spanish. Did you know children in Spain and some Latin American countries receive their presents brought not by Santa Claus (Papá Noel), but by The Three Kings (los Reyes Magos) on the 6th of January?
WHAT IS EL DIA DE LOS REYES?
On the eve of January 5th, children clean their shoes and leave them by the door with hopes that the three kings will leave gifts inside during their overnight visit, they also leave food and water for 'LOS TRES REYES MAGOS' / 'THE THREE KINGS' and their camels.
The 6th of January children wake up to find their presents left by the kings and have 'ROSCON DE REYES' / 'KING'S CAKE'. The ring-shaped pastry is decorated with glazed fruits representing colourful jewels and looking like a crown that a king would wear. Inside there is a figurine of baby Jesus or a tiny king, the person who finds it is crowned as king or queen for the day, sometimes another figurine is popped inside too such as lava bean and whoever finds it will have to buy 'ROSCON DE REYES' for the next year.
